Tell us something about you….
My name is Brian Ho, I’m originally from Chicago and currently, I’m pursuing a career in freelance while also completing my studies in computer science and interactive media.
How would you best describe your photography style?
I’d probably describe my style of photography as frenetic, in aesthetic style and in the subject matter. My photos are often very contrasty and very vibrant. And the subject matter is all over the board, I shoot from rooftops and abandoned buildings as well as in studios with assistants. I take part in a pretty vast range of photography
How’d you get into photography? Are you formally taught or self-taught?
I’m self-taught for the most part, though if you count the countless tutorials I’ve watched and read online in the past years I’ve been taught by many photographers.
Do you have a favorite image or experience? If so, can you tell us the backstory?
This is currently one of my favorite images simply because I never knew this view existed and hadn’t planned on capturing it that day. I’m usually very meticulous with my planning knowing exactly what I want to shoot and get before I go out, that day I was just exploring with a friend and saw this view. It taught me a lot about relaxing creatively and being less uptight in my approach.
Tell us about a place you would love to travel to. On this trip, you only get to take one lens with you ~ which would it be and why?
A place I’d love to travel to is Lofoten Norway, I was close to pulling the trigger last year but unfortunately, it fell through. If I only had one lens with me on that trip it’d be the Sigma 20mm 1.4 art. It’s sufficiently wide for landscapes, extremely fast with relatively shallow of for any environmental portraits and the speed would help with astrophotographers as well.
Do you have any specific goals for your photography?
These days I know less and less about what my goals are, my work life balance is all screwed up. Sometimes I create for work and other times I create for myself and it gets confusing and mixed up all the time because the content I create for myself doesn’t necessarily work commercially etc, and some of the commercial work I do aren’t creatively stimulating. Ultimately I just hope that people enjoy my photos as much as I do making them. If I can create an emotional impact on them, that’s enough
