The story behind the picture. Dive Site: Cabo Pulmo, a federally protected National Marine Park located near the tip of Baja, California. It was October 5th, 2016. We were on the hunt to find a very large group of fish rumored to be in our area at the time. (Apparently, it’s a rare thing to find happening and a special sight to behold should you be so fortunate to stumble upon it). We got the queue. Quickly we scrambled our items together and boarded the smaller zodiac dive boats. All geared up and ready to go, off we went. Speeding out to this rumored area with our guide onboard, he soon pointed downward to the water across from me. From my view, I couldn’t see anything looking down through the crystal blue, but I was still in absolute eager anticipation! How awesome would these dive be if we actually found ourselves smack-dab in front of this group of fish they were talking about, I thought. I was already excited about the fact I was about to embark on my official 100th logged dive. Little did I know what was in store for all of us just below the surface. A quick backward roll and I was in the water on my way down to the bottom with my other fellow divers. Our knowledgeable guide had positioned us ahead, and he was banking on the current to lead this epic event right towards us. We waited on the bottom looking into the vastness around us. White sand as far as you could see. It was a bright sunny day with not a cloud in sight. I noticed huge rays of sunlight penetrating through the top of the water above us. Then it happened. Just like he planned. I paused with my group of divers, snapped this picture and watched the sheer magnitude and wonder unfold in front of me. This group of Jack Fish quickly grew into the thousands moving towards us. I couldn’t believe what was happening. Images of National Geographic documentaries raced through my mind, except this time I was actually seeing it all with my own two eyeballs. Only moments after taking this photo would I soon move closer to this gigantic spiraling pack and experience something I now often think back to as the single greatest moment I’ve had under the water.(That story, and video to be shared at a later date)
